A trash-filled, crumbling urban neighborhood can breed despair and fear. There are different kinds of emotional reactions. To prevent this from happening, every school in America should teach the arts of critical thinking and critical reading, so that a critical spirit becomes a permanent possession of every student and pervades the teaching of every course in America.
And connected to routine there is a huge obstacle: It's crucial to examine the history of a problem or issue, as well as efforts to deal with it. Critical-thinking tasks tend to be much more difficult than others in part because critical thinking needs to be built on a foundation of language and comprehension.
Not much critical thinking needed there. But they all agree on a single criticism of public schooling in the United States: Now let's look at what the whole looks like with this part in it.
Also, it can be hard to convince faculty members to make a change that would likely hurt their evaluations -- and possibly their employment -- and often those evaluations depend on the grades that students receive. The first are "the intellectually disabled students.
Conventional wisdom is often too conventional: Approach ideas and situations critically and, to the extent possible, explain your thinking so learners can see the process you've used to arrive at your conclusions. For centuries most children, as well as their parents, were forbidden even the opportunity to learn to read, so dangerous was its potential for self-liberation and questioning the way things were.
Critical examination of the situation and the available information could lead to anything from further study to organizing a strike, but it should lead to something. Develop criteria on which you can judge the alternative solutions you've come up with. So far I've only mentioned the Elements of Thought as structures we need to become conversant in.
I assess my thinking for relevance.
New things are present, new ideas, new technologies, new dangers, and old thinking is being used to deal with these new problems, because those engaged in that old thinking don't know how to operate with thinking as their object. You can be racially biased, but you can also be biased toward looking at all humans as one family.
Sometimes ideas were debated, but not always. It requires that we consider whose story needs to be told. What's the source of the information? Identify the assumptions behind the problem. Does it make sense? Using current examples -- comparing various newspaper and TV news stories, for instance, to see what different aspects are emphasized, or to see how all ignore the same issues -- can also be a powerful way of demonstrating what needs to be asked.
Moreover, introducing critical thinking into an already-stuffed course tends to lower grades, as critical-thinking questions tend to be difficult and different from what students are accustomed to. It considers both the simplicity and complexity of its object. Proceed at your own risk. Everything else is just uninformed opinion lacking intellectual valence.
Apart from a few teachers who do train their students in critical thinking, most teachers do not for one simple reason -- there is no time.Interestingly enough, the more a school costs -- whether it's a well-funded public school in an affluent community, or an expensive private school -- the more apt it is to encourage and teach critical thinking.
